Two sisters, Guadalupe and Alejandra Viveros, are accused of operating the illegal cosmetics business that is responsible for Contreras’s death. The cosmetic business was run from inside the Viveros’ house in Sylmar. Initial reports on Contreras’ death claimed respiratory problems to be the cause, however, the LAPD are awaiting the results of the toxicology report.
The sisters had already been arrested on June 21 after numerous patients complained to police about complications following injections in the face and buttocks. The duo were released on bail and continued to practice illegally until Contreras’s death.
Both sisters missed their court date last Monday and presumably fled to avoid prosecution. They are thought to have returned to Mexico where Guadalupe claimed to be a physician.
This is not the first, nor will it be the last, instance of black-market procedures gone awry. It is important for patients to always put their health before their beauty. Only a licensed medical doctor should be performing cosmetic procedures of any kind. If a cosmetic treatment sounds too good to be true, run the other way.
